Dr. Dan Tan

Dean of SOU

Today, we gather here to celebrate a profound milestone in your lives— the conclusion of years of dedication, study, and a deep passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

As your dean, it brings me immense pride and joy to stand in front of you, You are all remarkable individuals, carrying forward a legacy of healing that has existed for thousands of years.

Your journey to this day has not been easy. It required long nights of study, countless hours of practice, and a deep commitment to understanding the human body and spirit.

Dan Tan with one of the students

You have learned to see beyond the symptoms, to listen to the body’s silent messages, and to treat each patient as a unique individual. This holistic approach is what makes TCM so powerful and relevant in people’s lives today.

In the years to come you will face many challenges. You may encounter doubts, misunderstanding and hurdles in integrating TCM into mainstream healthcare. But I urge you to remain steadfast. Be confident in the knowledge you have gained and the values you uphold. Continue to learn, to grow and to innovate, for medicine is an ever-evolving field and you are now part of its evolution.

Today is a day of celebration, but it is also a day of gratitude. I ask you to take a moment to reflect on the support of your families, friends, teachers, coordinators and all those who have been by your side on this journey. Their belief in you has been a cornerstone of your success.

Ling Zhang, NVA

We congratulate you all on your graduation.

Dear members of the board, Mr. Dong, Mrs. Tan, Mr. Van Hees thank you for inviting us to this graduation ceremony. My name is Ling Zhang, I am from China and I live on Texel more than 18 years now. I work as an acupuncturist and herbalist for 6 years in Den Helder. I am a taskforce member of the communication department of the Dutch Acupuncture Association: de NVA (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Acupunctuur.

It’s an honor that today I may speak to you on behalf of the Dutch Acupuncture Association, NVA. We congratulate you all on your graduation.

Opening by Rob van Hees Graduation 2021 Shenzhou Open University of TCM

We also would like to thank and congratulate all teachers and professors who passed their knowledge and skills to a new generation of practitioners in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

It started all with your curiosity about acupuncture and Chinese medicine. And after your study you became eager to spread your knowledge, teach others the wonderful theory and the profound skills in practice. And you not only offered your knowledge, but also your understanding, your patience and your encouragement. Once again, thank you!

But above all I’d like to congratulate the graduates. You did it!

This day marks the transition from being a student into becoming a practitioner in Chinese Traditional Medicine. That is very exciting and promising.

Classic Huang Di Nei Jing said: “When you are calm, your true energy will follow you, your spirit will be focused inside yourself, and you will get better soon.”

 恬淡虚无,真气从之,精神内守,病安从来。

My teachers always said:

TCM is learning in the Clinic every day.

Learn from your clients, take courses, go to congresses, keep studying classic books, like Huang Di Nei Jing, Dao De Jing, Yi Jing. 活到老,学到老。Each single client is also your teacher in clinical life.

These words help me every day.

And remember, if you really don’t know what to do in the clinic, you can always ask your teachers, colleagues in NVA or people in other organizations, we are happy to help you in this big TCM family.

Last, but not least, I would like to tell you about the NVA, The association for acupuncturists and TCM-practitioners in The Netherlands. I think it is great to be part of the NVA, it is a high standard association with a solid board and a professional office to serve you.

You can apply as an acupuncturist for membership, so feel welcome to apply! Visit our website www.acupunctuur.nl, also for information about a professional liability insurance for example. If you find things complicated, just ask us we will help you through. The general email address is: nva@acupunctuur.nl

As soon as you are a member you can find everything you need to help you in your practice on our members portal. Information about law issues, like privacy and patient rights, health insurances and others. With our digital newsletter we keep our members informed as well.

If you have any questions as a member, just ask the office. The more you ask, the sooner we get to know each other. We want YOU to do the things you like, that you are trained for: taking care of your clients. WE will take care of the rest, we promise!

Thank you!

Toine Korthout, teacher

My graduating students of course know ‘The Tea Pot Story’ from my syllabus on Communication.

Dear Mr. Dong, dear representatives of therapists organizations, dear dean and study coordinators of Shenzhou Open University, and most of all: dear graduating students and their guests.

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the crew of teachers and the exam committee.

First of all my congratulations to each graduate! Each one of you has successfully fulfilled a tough work. Studying at Shenzhou Open University of TCM is studying at an education institute that meets with HBO (Bachelor) level standards and that is accredited as such. That means not only attending quite a lot of classes, but besides that a lot of study at home as well. Besides there was practical education in the clinic downstairs for those to whom apply.

I want to give some extra positive attention to one particular graduating student: Santiago. He offered – all by his own initiative – many study facilitating services to students and even to teachers. Thanks and applause!

My graduating students of course know ‘The Tea Pot Story’ from my syllabus on Communication. They will explain to their guests later. But for short: A person can wear tainted glasses. The colour of the glasses you wear determine the contrasts you see. A different tainted pair of glasses result in different aspects that come clearly into your scope. Reality, or truth if you like, is always wider, bigger than the scope you have with e certain pair of tainted glasses.

Here at Shenzhou you are taught to look through different tainted glasses: from traditional Chinese perspective as well as from so called ‘western’ of natural-scientific perspective. On one hand students learn theory about and skills in traditional therapies of which the value and merits cannot easily be seen if you wear the western glasses. On the other hand you learn to understand and search so called ‘red flags’ by looking through ‘western’ glasses.

With your graduation you give proof of qualification.

Once again: my sincere congratulations. And success in application of what you have learned in your future position as a therapist!

Ilonka Kamans, Student (Graduate)

I never ever could have foreseen, that I would be so lucky, to embark on the Journey inside Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shenzhou university.

As a child (I grew up once upon a long time ago in the most Northern part of the Netherlands), I was never really exposed to Chinese culture; except for one very important item, which had made a deep impression on me as a child: the magical power of little Chinese lucky charms.

I so strongly believed in their power, that they became part of my life; especially when I grew older. If I feel like wishing someone good luck (for anything), I still give it away as a little present. I have quite a stock at home. It could very well be the case, however, that I adopted the little Chinese lucky charms, so enthusiastically, because Dutch culture lacks such a small pretty token of good luck; we have a horseshoe as a symbol for good luck. It goes without saying, that this not easily to give away, leave alone, carry it around in your handbag.

I never ever could have foreseen, that I would be so lucky, to embark on the Journey inside Traditional Chinese Medicine at Shenzhou university.

Which brings me here today. Standing in front of you all, my dear and lovely fellow students being part of this TCM Journey, which drove me absolutely mad sometimes.Especially since it felt like learning a complete new language: Hot, Cold, Yin, Yang, Excess, Deficiency, Tonify, Purge, Liver Qi stagnation leading to Liver Yang rising. Of Course.Sure. Why not?!

Fortunately, curiosity maintained and slowly, step by step (but that’s probably me (the slowness of my brain, I mean), I gained more insight and truly learnt to appreciate the Mantra of Dr. Dan Tan gave us some time ago: ‘TCM is a Life Long Learning resonated and still resonates as a soothing sentence back in my mind, to keep me going and carrying on learning, every day.

I can’t think of a Life without TCM anymore. It is everywhere. It is in my father who phones me to remind me to bring my glass cups to relieve his shoulder pain; it is in enhancing Lung Qi in Autumn (right now) in Qigong practice,to boost our immune system; it is in carefully and gently placing needles in the fragile body of a friend, who’s diagnosed Pancreas cancer, trying to ease the side effects of chemotherapy and making her eat again, as we were all taught: ‘as long as there is stomach Qi, there is life!’.

Today is a special day, we celebrate our qualification as acupuncturists! Congratulations to all of you! Thank you so much for being you and being part of the last 3 years (for some of you 4 years) of studying TCM together.

There is one quote I would like to share with you and give to you, in order not to forget. It is a quote from chapter 15 from the Huang di Nei Jing . It is about the Art of Acupuncture.

The Art of Acupuncture

The important thing is to make sure that the Qi in the channels arrives.

You must grasp the moment.

Regardless of how deep or shallow the point, or wether it is distal or

proximal, when acupuncturing you must focus your qi and your Shen

or spirit as if facing an abyss one thousand feet deep.

Everything must be done with delicate care.

When manipulating the needles with your fingertips, you should

handle the needles as if handling a fierce tiger.

Focus all your attention.

Chapter 25 Preservation of Health

The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine

For all of you in a carton frame, representing us at a humble starting point in our TCM careers. And to remind us of the Journey of lifelong learning ahead of us. For Dr. Dan Tan in a golden frame, representing her wisdom, her experience and her inspirational way of teaching us! Thank you!

And of course for all of you a small Chinese happy charm, for good luck on your Journey!

Let’s stay in touch.
