2021 Graduation Ceremony
The 28th Graduation Ceremony of Shenzhou Open University of TCM (SOU) was held at SOU main campus in Amsterdam on 15 October 2021.
The ceremony was attended by Ms. Wilma van Maarschalkerweerd, member of the board of the Dutch Acupuncture Association, Mr. Zhilin Dong, SOU president, as well as teachers, graduates and their families and friends.
Welcome by Rob van Hees
2020-2021 was a difficult year for training institutes. Face-to-face (on-site) education was not possible for many months. Nevertheless, Shenzhou has successfully made it through the transition from on-site to hybrid education.

By splitting theory and practice, we were able to continue the lessons via online media. During the periods when on site education was possible again, thanks to the efforts of teachers, students and coordination, we were able to catch up with practical education intensively, so that we were still able to complete the original curriculum.
We are very grateful to all those involved for their commitment and flexibility.
Dr. Dan Tan
Dean of SOU
Graduation Day is always a special occasion. But today feels particularly momentous. Who knew what all our students would have to go through when they first signed up 3 years ago?
Successful graduates have always worked hard to achieve their rewards. But everyone here has not only had to master the very tricky subject of Chinese Medicine, you have all had to battle through the biggest health emergency in 100 years.
“The success of Shenzhou is inseparable from the success of our graduates. We live in unpredictable times in terms of politics, climate, economics and many more aspects – all these have an impact on people’s physical and emotional health. With your skills and enthusiasm you can be at the forefront of meeting these challenges and helping the people and societies in which you live maintain good health and wellbeing.”

Celebrate and welcome 64 graduates
It is my great pleasure to be invited to attend Shenzhou’s Graduation Ceremony in 2021 and give a speech on behalf of the academic staff, especially after nearly 20 months of hibernation. In fact, today is my first overseas trip, away from England since the beginning of 2020. My first voyage after lockdown is to celebrate your graduation, just as Ramon, my friend and colleague, who travelled from Spain today.
Since the beginning of 2020, this world and our society has changed dramatically. Covid-19 has made us to rethink the value of our life, how vulnerable we are although the troublemaker is just a micro-organism! How important it is, that we maintain the balance in nature! TCM, on the other hand, has a big part to play in this respect.

Representative of Zhong and chairman of their committee for continuing training
Delivered a speech to the graduates during the Graduation ceremony. It was a fascinating speech with a humorous twist here and there. It was also a spontaneous speech, so unfortunately, we can’t reproduce it here.
Ms. Wilma van Maarschalkerweerd
Member of the board of the Dutch Acupuncture Association (NVA)
Dear members of the board, mr. Dong, Mrs. Tan, thank you for inviting me to this graduation ceremony, on behalf of the Dutch Acupuncture Association, NVA.
As a member of the board I am honored to be able to congratulate you all with this day. In the first place the teachers of this university, as you delivered a group of fresh, well-trained acupuncturists. It started all with your curiosity after acupuncture and Chinese medicine. And after your study you became eager to spread your knowledge, teach others the wonderful theory and the profound skills in practice. And you not only offered your knowledge, but also your understanding, your patience and your encouragement. Once again, thank you!
Carsten Smink
Graduate
Hi everyone, I am very happy to be standing here tonight with all of you, and I feel honored to have been presented with the opportunity to also say a few words.
My name is Carsten and I studied at Shenzhou for the past 3 years. After hearing all of these great experts and teachers, I would like to share some of my personal experiences studying here over these past 3 years.
I think my interest in TCM and Chinese culture started at an early age watching Chinese kung fu movies. When I finished highschool in 2007, my best Friend and I had just turned 18 and we saved up some money and flew to China to travel the country for 3 months. This experience was so inspiring that I knew I had to come back someday.
